Layton OKs 'Dumpster diving' for private investigators - Standard.NET - Standard-Examiner

LAYTON -- The number who can legally "Dumpster dive" in Layton has expanded.Technorati Tags: private investigator, dumpster diving, p.i.,
The city council has amended an ordinance that prohibits scavenging -- Dumpster diving -- to now allow any licensed private investigator to sift through trash.
The council made the change on the recommendation of City Attorney Gary Crane.
In 2005, the council gained media notoriety when it put in place an ordinance preventing people -- with the exception of police -- from sifting through other businesses' or residents' garbage.
The intent of the law, modeled after an ordinance in Orem, is to protect residents from having their identity stolen and to offer police a proactive investigative tool.
